Unravelling The WalkSmart Story in the ACT!
Posted 7th December 2020. Category: General.
WalkSmart was founded in the ACT right before the COVID pandemic, in March 2020. Seb Aroney the founder of WalkSmart constructed the store along with colleagues Edward, Eddie and Ongky, and so the store was officially opened in July.
WalkSmart was built on the vision to support the eMobility community in Canberra, specifically with the servicing and maintenance requirements of these types of vehicles - filling a gap. Prior to opening in 2020, there were no specialty eMobility specialists or service centers in the ACT. Owners who often purchased online or interstate had to freight their vehicles to get them serviced - being costly and slow. WalkSmart’s core business is servicing and maintaining; however, sales and rental services are also a significant focus.
Constructing the Store:
Constructing the store was a challenging process, taking approximately 2 months and costing a lot of money! We wanted to do things differently, everything was re-imagined from the ground up. Rather than having conventional shelving, we decided to hang all our eScooters by wire along the walls - so that customers could get up close, touch and feel all the products! We installed over 100+ lighting elements, making it a super bright and an inviting space that is also super practical so people can see the fine details clearly. We installed lots of greenery, hanging vines across a steel and aluminum internal frame, and painted a great big muraul of Canberra!
First month opening:
With store fit-out construction completed around the end of June, the shop was ready to serve in early July. After publishing on Google and starting to get the WalkSmart name out online, enquiries started coming in! From eScooter repairs, servicing and advice - it was a great sensation helping fellow-Canberrians out for exactly what we set out to achieve!
A few months on in September eScootering became a little bit more mainstream - with the release of free-roaming eScooters by Neuron and Beam through Canberra city. It is now a frequent occurrence to see people zipping around in the city on these two wheel devices.
The future of WalkSmart in Canberra:
Canberra is a micro city, with most people residing within 10km of their frequent destinations - so we believe micro-mobility can have a big impact. It’s easy to sell an eScooter, it’s more difficult to service and repair and it’s extremely difficult to have resources in order to repair on the spot with the right parts, right team, and to do this efficiently. This is what we are here to achieve in the ACT going forward.
Please feel free to check our latetst collections of escooters if you intend to buy one the e-scooter this season.

WalkSmart recommends that you check your local state laws and regulations in relation to using electric scooters in public locations, roads and footpaths. Laws vary state by state and therefore may limit use to private locations only. Each local body is reviewing public electric scooter use, so we expect it to be regulated, but legal in all states within the short term. Feel free to contact WalkSmart if you have any further queries.
